By Megan DeMarco. New Jersey has a thriving gay night life. Looking for a late night of dancing?
For the Connecticut crowd, the go-to choices for exclusive escapes have been Fire Island, N. Toronto, Philadelphia, Washington, Palm Springs, New Orleans, and Montreal are among the places that seek out gay travelers to their diverse cities. But for something a little closer to home, and a bit beachier, think New Jersey.
While the LGBT community can be ultra welcoming, it can sometimes have a reputation for being, shall we say, "divisive" at times, sometimes making it a tad harder for the bears, the lesbians and the circuit queens to all play nicely within the same ultra colorful sandbox. The one place that has managed to bring them all together almost seamlessly is Asbury Park NJ. This vibrant shore town went from what Bruce Springsteen so eloquently called "My City Of Ruins" in his hit song, to one of the most talked about and visited summer destinations for the LGBT community.
Asbury Park was founded as a Christian retreat in the s by a man named James A. It remained one of the most popular family resorts in the United States untilwhen race riots burned down much of the downtown area. Soon radicals, beatniks, hippies, and musicians moved in.

An average stroll through town could reveal a drag queen bingo party or an impromptu drum circle on the boardwalk. Asbury Park delights in the unexpected.

I've been going here nearly since they opened and the place sure has com a long way in the recent years. While it was always a friendly vibe and staff, there have been a bunch of upgrades and focus on specific "theme" nights as of the last 5 years or so. Sunday's Georgies often hosts benefits for local causes.
